Et cetra

I enjoy working on new (and varied) technologies, especially exploring their amalgamations. As a personal goal in the projects I undertake, I tend to use new technologies and see how they work with other ones I already know. Here, I've compiled a list of what I've been working on lately, with a very brief description of the context they were used in:

Google Maps » Javascript » Java Applet » Serial Port » Accelometers This was a mini-project in tangible computing. Hyun Jean, a colleague of mine had built a tilting table that can communicate to the computer using accelerometers via serial port. I created a web-based application that reads the serial port for the tilt angle of the table using a java, which controls a google map projected on the table using javascript and Google Map API.

Flash » XML » MP3 sound As an exploratory exercise in making Flash widgets for online content, this simple application parses the XML feed from NPR website to obtain a list of feaured artists. The application can also stream MP3 music if you want to listen to the songs of these featured artists.

RFID set-up » Java RFID technology is getting popular by the day, so I decided to give it a hand. Using the JAVA serial API and Series 4100 Reader from Texas Instruments, I built a RFID setup working at 13.56 MHz to identify objects that are tagged by RFID tags.

Cell phone camera » Tomcat Server » php+html This was a mobile phone application that enabled pictures to be taken from the java-enabled-phone camera, and automatically uploaded them to a tomcat server in PNG format. These pictures were then accessed by a php application, overall providing a quick and easy way for live journals.

If I get time sometime, I would try to put up tutorials for each of them... but don't bank on it!

Pronounciation Key

Having trouble pronouncing my name? After talking to a lot of people, (and a considerable amount of experimentation), I've found a way to make people pronounce my name correctly. Don't worry... I don't really mind even if you don't get it right!

So, here's how to pronounce my first name:
"Madhur" can be divided into two separate parts:
1. 'Mad' - Say 'Mad' as it's in Madrid.
2. 'hur' - end with Hûr

Thats it! I hope this helps.
